U.S.A – Country Profile
Women's Cricket Domestic Structure and Developmental Pathways
As of now there is one senior national training group and one age-group U19 training group. A recently developed pathway into the national squad is an intra-regional hard-ball competition, which starts in May 2021. While these intra-regional matches are planned to serve as the first level in the pathway towards the national squad, there's an additional championship planned between the East and West Coast, which is also part of the selection process. Moreover, many of the women's national players get the opportunity to play in their local senior men's league.
Apart from the aforementioned selection pathways U.S.A cricket have held the 'girl's cricket league' tournament annually, where girls from all around the country come together to compete in the Central Broward Stadium in Florida, which contains turf wickets. (Fun fact: the West Indies and Indian national women's teams have played in this same stadium). There's also different co-ed youth programs and games, which is divided into different age-groups.
The U.S.A women have their ICC regional qualifiers for the T20 2023 world cup, against Argentina, Brazil and Canada, scheduled sometime around September 2021. The winner of this tournament would progress onto the Global qualifiers.
Former Australian international cricketer, Julia Price, is the current women's national head coach. However, there are opportunities to work with other coaches during elite training camps, such as when the women had the chance to work with experienced English coach, Julien Fountain. As players are spread out all across the country, U.S.A cricket has also provided players with a 'satellite coaching program', which consists of a head coach being appointed to work with a group of local players in a certain area. U.S.A cricket also holds 'elite training camps' over selected weekends several times a year in different locations around U.S.A, where players go through fitness testing, specific skill sessions and access to specialist coaches.
Strength and Conditioning
Burt Cockley is the physical performance coach for the whole of U.S.A cricket, from age-group onwards. Each player gets an individualised S&C program from him according to their role, which they all follow from their respective locations.
The women have certified physios when they go on U.S.A cricket camps and tours. However, as of now, they don't have a permanent physio
All of the women and girls in the national training group have work or school commitments and don't get paid to play. However, during national tours, U.S.A cricket pays for plane tickets, hotels, satellite coaching sessions and gym reimbursements.
